Jenna was unhappy and a little sad. This was their last night together. Her and Alex had had the most perfect week together and she couldn’t have asked for more. She started to tear up and Alex could hear her beginning to cry a little. He didn’t ask what was wrong, he knew and he was just as equally upset but ever so grateful & thankful that they did get to spend an amazing time together. He just held her closely in his arms and whispered “I love you Jen. Even though we’ll be apart, we’ll be forever close in each other’s hearts”.
Alex always did have a way with words. It’s one of the many reasons she fell for him. She whispered back “I love you too” and fell back asleep in the safety & comfort of his strong arms.
Waking up was difficult as today was the day they both wished had never came. Jenna was all ready and packed to go. “Ready?” Alex asked. She took one last look around the place.”Yeah” Jenna replied with a slight sigh in her voice. He walked up to her, held her hands, brought them to his face, kissed them gently and gave her a great big hug.
They made it to the train station with an hour to wait. They sat on the bench and held each other tight till they heard her train being announced.
“I guess it’s time” she said, tears welling in her brown eyes.
As she stood up and grabbed her bags, Alex stood up, looked into her eyes, hugged her again and said “I don’t want you to leave. Stay”. This broke her heart all over again to hear this. How she wished she could stay. But she knew she couldn’t this time.
The train pulled up and they both had to painfully tear away from each other’s loving embrace.
Jenna kissed him one last time and Alex wiped away her falling tears.
She turned to leave and didn’t look back till she heard Alex shout her name.
She didn’t want to turn back, but she did. And as she did, she dropped her bag, gasped and began to tear up again.
There was Alex, on bended knee, with a ring in his hand….
Time stood still as Alex waited for Jenna to make her way toward him. But she just stood there. He wondered if she’d move at all as she just stood there for what seemed like an eternity.
Jenna wiped the trailing tears from her cheek, turned her head back and watched as the train pull away from the station. She took a deep breath and made her way over to Alex who was still knelt on bended knee.
As she walked towards him he held out his hand and she held it.
“Alex, what are you doing” she said through a choked up smile. He stood up, looked her in the eye and said with confidence “Jenna, will you marry me?”
She coyly smiled at him and said “let’s sit and talk. I’ve missed the train an there isn’t another one for at least two more hours”.
Alex’s face displayed slight worry but he played it cool. He picked up one of her bags and together they made their way over to a quiet spot in the cafeteria and ordered hot beverages.
Once their drinks came Jenna began to speak but was cut off mid-sentence by Alex.
“Jenna, please, before you talk, let me speak while I still have the courage to. You know I love you. And I know we haven’t been together for that long, a year and 2 months to be exact, but I know that every time I’m with you, I want it to last forever. I feel it in my heart. You’re the one I want. You’re the one I love. I’m certain of it. I hate not waking up next to you each morning and hate having to let you go and say good bye every time. I just”…he pause then continued…“I just want you here with me always, I need you in my life Jenna”
Jenna could hardly believe all of what she was hearing. Her face didn’t show it but her heart was breaking into a thousand pieces. She loved Alex too, with all her heart, but she wasn’t so sure about marriage. She tried to gather her thoughts as best as she could then spoke.
“Alex. My dearest Alex. I love you too, with all my heart. You know this. But…we haven’t been together that long. Yes it’s been a year and 2 months but we’re still getting to know each other. I want nothing more than to be with you too each and every day. But why do we need to rush into getting engaged and married at our age? We’re still young and have both just started new careers. Let’s just enjoy the moment while we can before deciding on getting really serious ad settling down together”
Alex looked at her and sat back in his chair. “What exactly are you saying Jenna?” asked Alex with a slightly bewildered look. “You don’t want to get married? Or even get married at all?” He felt as though she was making excuses for some reason but did not voice them.
“No no no, that’s not what I’m saying at all. Of course I want to marry you, but it’s just not the right time” She buried her face in her hands. “I’m just surprised by all this and still in shock from it all. Right now.. I’m not saying yes and I’m not saying no. I guess what I’m trying to say is, one day in the future if we’re still together then we can plan a proper future together.
Alex tried to make sense of what Jenna was trying to say. After a few minutes of thinking he said with a little sigh and realisation “Yeah I probably could have times this a whole lot better. It’s just that we had such an amazing time together and I just wanted it to end perfectly”
“End perfectly how? By proposing to me and then me still leaving at the end of it? Jenna asked with a slight laugh.
They looked at each other and began to laugh.
“Oh Alex, I do love you, you silly monkey” said Jenna with a smiled as Alex took her hand and held it across the table. He looked at his watch and noticed that the train was due in 10 minutes. “Well I suppose we better get you ready for your departure. Train is due soon. She nodded in agreement.
They stood outside waiting for the train, and as they did, they held each other in a loving embrace. The announcement came in for her train and they could see it pull up and stop. Jenna began to tear up again. She hated this part. They both did. Alex squeezed her tight and reluctantly let her go so she could board.
“I’ll call you as soon as I get home” she promised him. She knew how much he worried about her travelling long distances alone.
They kissed each other one last time and said bye.
Jenna looked through the window at Alex through teary eyes and blew a kiss as he smiled and waved at her.
The train slowly pulled away and soon Alex was out of view. She took a deep breath and exhaled slowly. That was some morning she thought to herself. As she recalled the events, her heart began to sink. Alex had proposed to her. He had wanted to marry her.
She didn’t give him an answer. She couldn’t for she had a secret. A secret that not even her family knew about. She was living a lie and it was tearing her apart.
How could she ever find a way to tell Alex the real reason why she didn’t want to get married? Would he understand?
Jenna’s heart broke. How could she ever live a happily married life with Alex when she was still technically married to -but legally separated from- Marcus?
